A Brief Overview of the Android Honeycomb Operating System.
By Eric James
Everyone has been wondering how the Android market will hold up now that Apple has released the iPad 2.
The answer comes in the form of Android Honeycomb 3 and it is now the operating system of choice for all the new tablets.
Honeycomb 3 includes lots of new tech including the new holographic user interface system.
As an extension of the Android OS for phones Honeycomb has rich notifications, enhanced multitasking, widgets, home screen customization, and more. Transforming the user interface into a rich 3D experience Honeycomb may feel familiar to Android users but under the hood there is technology at work making the experience even better than before.
As the new OS becomes more commonplace more applications will be created to specifically take advantage of the extra media potential and powerful graphics capabilities.
There are two new bars present. The "Systems" and "Action" bar. The "systems bar" will always be visible along the bottom of the display. This allows the user to be aware of things such as new emails even while they are inside an application.
The "Action bar" presents itself when you are running an application. Being contextual the "action bar" will give you options specific to the application currently running and will be the main focus of supplying application information.
You can have the usual five customised home screens that give users access to everything in Honeycomb. Home screens use a grid placement system that lets users put widgets, icons, shortcuts and wallpapers wherever they need and want.
The Android keyboard has been enhanced as well. Typing is now easier with more keys added for richer text editing such as the tab key. They have also been reshaped and repositioned for better accuracy. You can now switch from text/input modes through a special button in the system bar and touching and holding keys will bring up a menu of special characters.
Honeycomb now includes new connectivity features that add usability and convenience for users. Built-in support for cameras and MP3 lets users instantly sync media files with a USB-connected camera or desktop computer, without needing to mount a USB hard drive. Another nice advantage is the ability to attach a full USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
There is a new web browser included in Honeycomb. The web experience is now easier to navigate and organize with Honeycomb's new browser features. An 'incognito' mode allows for anonymous browsing and instead of windows the browser now features tabs.
The Email application uses a new two-pane interface to make viewing and organizing your mail much quicker. By selecting one or messages and then activating the Action bar you can select what to do with the messages such as deleting or moving them to a new folder. Users can sync attachments for later viewing and keep track of email using a home screen Widget.
A new camera application has been re-written to take advantage of the extra screen real estate. There is also faster access to exposure, focus, zoom, flash, the front facing camera and a few more extras. Honeycomb also supports time-lapse video recording giving users new and exciting ways to create videos. A newly updated Gallery application enables users to view their collection in full screen mode while still having quick access to the other albums in their collection.
With large screen Android tablets people now have a choice. The Android range of tablets allows users to choose feature sets that will be of most use to them and they are no longer limited to one choice in the portable tablet range. If you want a smaller tablet that is more portable you have that option. If you need something bigger or something more powerful to play games on or be more productive then that is also available.
